The International Symposium on Dinosaurs and other Vertebrates Palaeoichnology was held in Fumanya (Barcelona, Spanish Pyrenees) in October 2005, a few kilometers from the major Late Cretaceous sauropod footprint site (see Vila et al., this volume). This meeting was organized by the Consorci Ruta Minera and the Espéraza Dinosaur museum (Project Interreg-IIIA of the European Union), with the support of the Institut de Paleontologia M. Crusafont in Sabadell, the Department of Geology of the Universitat Autònoma in Barcelona, the Fundación Patrimonio Paleontológico de La Rioja, the Museo Geominero (IGME) and the Fundació La Caixa.

The organizers would like to thank the Cercs town council and all the villages of Consorci Ruta Minera as well as the Museu de les Mines de Cercs for their logistics facilities.

We also warmly thank our colleagues Félix Pérez-Lorente (Fundación Patrimonio Paleontológico de La Rioja) and José Joaquin Moratalla (Museo Geominero, IGME) for organizing the field trip in la Rioja.

55 ichnologists from 11 countries attended the Fumanya meeting and 36 contributions were presented (abstracts are available on the Espéraza Dinosaur Museum website: www.dinosauria.org). The present volume includes 9 papers dedicated to dinosaur ichnology, 5 of them dealing with localities from the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain). A single contribution treats of Triassic vertebrate footprints of Northern Italy (Avanzini & Mietto). Many aspects of dinosaur ichnology are treated in this volume: cultural importance of footprint sites (dos Santos et al.), ichnotaxonomy (Gierlinski & Sabath), palaeopathology (Avanzini et al.), description of new sites (Gierlinski et al.; Mateus & Milán), palaeogeography (Dalla Vecchia), footprint preservation (Whyte & Romano), general reviews (Lockley et al.).

We dedicate this volume to the memory of our colleague Karol Sabath (1963-2007). Karol attended the meeting in Fumanya and co-authors one paper in this volume (with Gerard Gierlinski). He was a friendly colleague, a skilled artist and a great palaeontologist (see Kielan-Jaworowska, 2007 for Karol’s obituary). He will be missed by the whole vertebrate palaeontology community.
